(More customer reviews)I bought this barometer for my father for Christmas and ended up getting him a second one because he loved it so much. I would not consider it a toy because it is made of glass and is therefore somewhat fragile. You can affix it to a table with museum clay or other surface-safe adhesive to prevent it toppling and possibly breaking or spilling. It is a beautiful piece to have on a table and is very functional. It will tell you what the atmospheric pressure is (and therefore what the weather is like). This is a great educational piece as well as stunning. It can be filled with water of any color so it can be matched to your decor. I may buy a third one for myself in the near future.

Made from hand-blown glass -- The earliest barometers were simple glass bulbs with a spout that helped ancient seaman predict storms. Water moving up the spout means low pressure with potentially stormy conditions, while high pressure pushes the water down to the bottom of the spout.
