It's a little unnecessary, since you could basically play with things you find around the house, but the lights and sounds the cups make add to the fun, so it justifies itself in that sense. But these extra balls are wildly overpriced! They are just ping pong balls! At the current price, they're very nearly $2 per ball, which is outrageous. Sure, they have cool little pictures on them, but for the same price you can get a 36-pack of regular ping pong balls (5 times as many balls) and have fun decorating them yourself.
